A 36-year-old man, Abayomi Afolarin, on Tuesday appeared before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan over an alleged N8.3 million fraud.
Afolarin, whose address was not provided, was charged with obtaining money under false pretence and stealing.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Samuel Owolabi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 16 at about 1.20 p.m. in the Eleyele area of Ibadan.
Owolabi alleged that the defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N8.3 million from one Emeka Nwakuche under the pretext of processing a Certificate of Sponsorship for him in the United Kingdom.
The prosecutor said the defendant was aware the claim was false and converted the money to his personal use.
He said the offences contravened Sections 419 and 390(9) of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The Magistrate, Mrs Gladys Oladele, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case until Sept.1 for hearing.
