Lawmaker begs court to temper justice in Nnamdi Kanu’s sentencing

Rep Obi Aguocha, on Thursday, appealed to the Federal High Court in Abuja to exercise restraint in applying the highest penalty in the terrorism offences preferred against Nnamdi Kanu.

Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia in the National Assembly, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.

The lawmaker, who was in court, told Justice James Omotosho while making allocutos on Kanu’s behalf after he was convicted in the seven-count filed against him by the Federal Government.

Justice Omotosho, who stood down proceedings after Kanu’s conviction, said the court would reconvene by 4pm to sentence the IPOB leader.

Counsel to the Federal Government, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, had urged the court to sentence Kanu to the maximum punishment of the death penalty.

Awomolo said more than 75 security personnel lost their lives due to the terrorist activities of Kanu, his groups and followers, while many other innocent Nigerians were also killed and public property destroyed.

He said the maximum punishment would serve justice to all the victims of his terrorist acts.
