Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting families of fallen heroes, pledging practical assistance beyond ceremonial observances.
Mbah spoke during wreath-laying and a parade at Okpara Square, Enugu, on Thursday, concluding events marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
He said the state would continue supporting the armed forces and their families, stressing that such commitment “goes beyond ceremony”.
According to him, support would reflect practical care, advocacy and partnership with the Federal Government, ensuring serving and retired personnel receive respect and care.
“On this Day of Remembrance, we honour families who carry their memory and recommit to the values for which they served: unity, discipline, service and respect.
“The wreaths remind us to live as citizens worthy of their sacrifices. May their souls rest in peace, and may strength and comfort surround their families,” Mbah said.
The governor prayed that Nigeria would be strengthened by “the service, sacrifice and professionalism” of its armed forces.
Mbah praised the military’s sacrifices, saying personnel had answered calls to protect the nation and ensure Nigeria’s security.
“From Monrovia to Freetown, Mogadishu to Darfur, Djerba and the former Yugoslavia, our forces have served with distinction beyond our borders,” he said.
He noted their contributions to peacekeeping and stability worldwide, earning Nigeria respect through professionalism and courage on international missions.
“At home, their role remains demanding amid insurgency and banditry. They continue to confront danger directly,” Mbah added.
A widow, Mrs Sarah Ugwuabonyi, said life had been difficult for families since losing their husbands.
“This day brings sorrow because we remember those who brought us into the barracks are no more.
“We thank God they are remembered and their sacrifices are not forgotten,” she said.
Commending the governor, Ugwuabonyi appealed for increased assistance to ease economic pressures on widows.
“School fees and house rents are difficult. Government can provide affordable accommodation and help us raise the children our husbands left behind,” she said.
She also urged government to recruit educated widows and empower others with skills, including traders and hairdressers.
Highlights included wreath-laying by Governor Mbah, security chiefs, Speaker Uche Ugwu and Chief Judge Justice Raymond Ozoemena. The event also featured the release of pigeons.
