Court dissolves 12 years marriage on mutual agreement

An Area Court sitting at Centre-Igboro Area, Ilorin, on Wednesday dissolved a 12-year old Islamic marriage between Sherifat Kareem and Hakeem Shafa, based on mutual agreement.

Delivering his judgement, the Presiding Judge, Mr Toyin Aluko, said that there was no need keeping the couple together after they had mutually agreed to divorce.

“Islam encourages settlement of dispute between husband and wife, but if the good relationship has ceased, Islam does not want a toxic union,” he said.

He dissolved the Islamic marriage between the two parties, and ordered the wife to observe three months iddah (waiting period) before remarrying.

Earlier, Sherifat told the court that she was no longer interested in the marriage due to alleged painful experiences that she was going through after five children.

Shafa also urged the court to dissolve the marriage since his wife was no longer interest in the union.
