Qatar welcomes 2nd phase of Gaza peace plan

Qatar, which is helping to mediate a peace deal between Israel and Hamas, has welcomed the U.S. announcement of the start of the next phase of the Gaza peace plan.

The Gulf state hopes that the start of the second phase will contribute to improving the humanitarian situation, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid al-Ansari.

All parties must implement the agreement in full, he said, adding that humanitarian aid must be allowed without restriction to enable a dignified life.

He also called for rapid reconstruction of the Palestinian territory, which was largely destroyed by two years of war.

Late on Wednesday evening, al-Ansari called on the international community to continue to support a permanent ceasefire.

The second phase of the peace plan will focus on disarming Hamas, which it has so far refused to do, establishing a technocratic transitional government, and beginning the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced on Wednesday.

Egyptian security sources said Hamas had agreed on the names for the planned transitional technocratic government.

No Hamas members are allowed in the group.
