Organization for Women in Science (OWSD) South East Zone urges female students to embrace science subjects

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) South East Zone has encouraged female students to pursue science subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology to pave the way for careers as scientists, innovators, and Artificial Intelligence experts.

Prof. Mrs. Uchenna Odoh, Coordinator of OWSD Nigeria, South East Zone, made this call during the organization’s visit to St. Joseph College, Emene, Enugu, to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) on Tuesday.

The event, themed Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science," aims to inspire young girls to embrace science and technology.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that IDWGS is observed annually on February 11 to recognize the critical contributions of women and girls in tackling global challenges such as climate change, public health, and sustainable development.

Highlighting the gender disparity in science leadership, where women hold only about 20% of key positions globally, Prof. Odoh emphasized the importance of motivating female students to engage with STEM fields.

"This initiative is crucial in educating and empowering young girls to take science subjects seriously. OWSD is committed to training students in scientific skills, raising awareness, and fostering a passion for science through education," she stated.

"Our vision is to see these young girls become leading scientists, innovators, and key players in the scientific world. We aspire for them to pursue careers in STEM, she added.

Speaking on the theme, the Coordinator, OWSD, Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu,  Dr. Mrs. Adachukwu Ikeyi emphasised the need for female students to engage in science, technology, and mathematics education.

She said in spite of the many advances made in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), women and girls continue to be underrepresented.

She  added  that science and technology bring innovation and power while STEM education teach students problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills.

"This is why we women Scientists are committed to promoting the participation of women and girls in science and technology.
"The world needs more women in STEM," she advised.

Another member of the OWSD, Prof. Mrs. Harmony Nwobodo Nzeribe also encouraged them to explore science related courses to meet the changing world that creates job opportunities for them.

The event featured insightful presentations from distinguished speakers, including Engr. Mrs. Evelyn Ujam, who spoke on "Navigating STEM Careers: Breaking Barriers & Building Bridges," Engr. Mrs. Nkechi Aballa, who discussed "Pathways to Success in Sciences: Effective Study Tips and Inspiring Models," and Dr. Mrs. Modesta Ezema, who delivered a talk on "Good Manners and Etiquette."

Also, in attendance were some zonal members, including Dr. Mrs. Chidinma Okafor (OWSD Coordinator, Godfrey Okoye University), Dr. Oluchi Ann Olofin, Mrs Angela Ohadoma, Mrs
Izekor Ese Sandra, and Mrs. Ugwuozor Lovett.

Responding, the principal of the college, Sister Maria Emekwe, commended the group for finding the school worthy to visit.

She said the activities of OWSD would help in promoting science subjects in the schools.

The event's highlight was the presentation of gifts to the best students in core science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology) in both SS1 and SS2.
