The  Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of EnuguState, , Dr Eric Odo, has promised that  his administration would rehabilitate all  abandoned boreholes in the council area.

Odo gave the assurance  on Thursday during a reception organised in his honour by the people of Ikpogwu Ukehe in the council area.

The chairman said that rehabilitating abandoned boreholes would ensure that residents of the council area would enjoy safe and constant water supply.

According to him, rehabilitation work has already started at the Isi Engine borehole.

He said that water would be reticulated across Ukehe on completion of the rehabilitation.

He said that  a borehole in Ozalla abandoned for more than 30 years would   be given adequate attention soon to provide water to the community.

The chairman urged communities with non -functional boreholes to complain to the Office of his Chief of Staff, assuring  that the complaints would be looked into within a short period.

Odo promised to be fair in  siting and executing infrastructure projects, saying that every community in the council area would benefit from one project or the other.

He thanked the people of Ikpogwu Ukehe for the reception, noting that they were the first  in the local government area to host such an event.

He said that he had appointed six people from the community into  positions of authority, and assured the community that more people would be appointed from it.

Earlier in his address of welcome, the Chairman of the event’s organising committee, Mr Donatus Okpokoeze, said the event was aimed to thank the council chairman for his benevolence toward the community.

Okpokoeze described Odo as the first Igbo-Etiti council chairman to stand by his promise to position the poor above the rich.

He said that the chairman had fulfilled the promise in many ways, including erection of a house for a poor widow in Amanefi.

“Putting indigent students/pupils, poor widows and widowers in government’s payroll was hitherto unheard of.

“For the first time, appointments were not done based on political, ethnic and social standing of the recipients, but strictly on one’s ability to perform.

“The government in Igbo-Etiti is applying uniform development, engendering love and unity of purpose among our people.

“Revolutions in the areas of human capital development, agriculture, health, education infrastructure and humanitarian services are legendary,” Okpokoeze said.
